Wheat Grower’s League puts alert out on field burning ban

The Oregon Wheat Grower’s League is putting out the full alert on two bills that would end agriculture field bunring. OWGL is encouarging all farmers to attend the Wednesday and Thursday hearings on HB 2183 and SB 528.

HB 2183 reads “Allows Environmental Quality Commission to adopt rules listing additional counties to be covered by statutes relating to field burning. Modifies acreage that may be burned. Allows commission by order to permit emergency burning under certain conditions. Modifies fees for burning. Allows DEQ to evaluate burning programs.”


SB 528 reads: “Prohibits certain field burning in specified Oregon counties. Allows Environmental Quality Commission to adopt rules listing additional counties to be covered by prohibitions relating to field burning. Allows specified number of acres of steep terrain to be burned until 2011. Allows commission by order to permit emergency field burning of specified number of acres under certain conditions. Modifies fees for field burning. Transfers administration of certain provisions regarding field burning from State Department of Agriculture to DEQ. Establishes DEQ Service Fund and continuously appropriates moneys in fund to DEQ for administering provisions related to field burning.  Repeals provisions related to memorandum of understanding between Environmental Quality Commission and State Department of Agriculture.”

Field burning is one of those issues that the Legislature would like to toss out and pretend there is no consequences. Oh how wrong they are. This bill, these bills, would hurt Oregon farmers.

There is enough farmers in Marion-Polk county alone to fill a hearing. Let us hope they do. You can’t sit this one out.
