CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Waterfowl hunters have new maps to guide them around the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area (SIWA) this year thanks to a cooperative effort of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and two Portland area businesses.

ODFW worked with Image Pressworks and Spicers Paper Company to create the glossy full color maps of the Eastside and Westside hunting units. ODFW designed the maps, which were printed by Image Pressworks on paper donated by Spicers. The maps will be given to hunters at SIWA hunting check stations throughout the season, which opens Oct. 15 and continues through Jan. 29, 2012.

The maps were unveiled in 2010 in the publication “A Beginner’s Guide to Waterfowl Hunting Sauvie Island Wildlife Area.”

“The maps are very popular among our hunters,” said Rob Prince, ODFW senior technician, who runs the Westside check station.

The donation comes at a time when budgets are tight and there isn’t a lot of money for “extras” like brochures and maps.

“I get a lot of enjoyment out of bird hunting, and if I can help out in a pinch that’s what I’d like to do,” said Jerry Hilbert, owner of Image Pressworks.

“Sauvie Island is a great place to hunt,” added Spicers manager Chris Ferry, who has been hunting SIWA for the past four years. “I just want to see ODFW succeed out there.”
