The Fish & Wildlife Commission reversed course and decided [6] not to uplist the marbled murrelet from “threatened” to “endandered” on a 4-2 vote.

As we shared previously, back in February, the ODFW Commission voted four-to-two in favor of uplisting the marbled murrelet from “threatened” to “endangered” under the Oregon Endangered Species Act. The decision stemmed from a pair of petitions submitted by a coalition of environmental interests led by Cascadia Wildlands.

The Commission indicated that they will wait until more data is available from a current study on the sea bird. Thank you to everyone who testified before the Commission or submitted comments.

Another piece of good news occurred as the Lane County Counsel rejected a “community rights” measure that had submitted their signatures to appear on the ballot. This charter amendment would have been a county level declaration that preemption laws did not apply to Lane County. We expect proponents will challenge the determination, but in the meantime, it will not appear on the ballot.

Lastly, this month served as a reminder that every vote really counts. After a recount, it was determined that Jack Zika won the 53rd legislative district Republican primary by just two votes.
