As you know, Oregon’s state forests are a vital resource for Oregonians — supporting local economies, creating wildlife habitat, ensuring access to recreation and providing renewable timber for our communities.
House Bill 3103 [7] is a good bill that will ensure sustainable timber harvests on state forests. It establishes clear, data-backed harvest levels and improves public transparency and predictability around timber harvests on state forestland.
This bill is scheduled for a hearing this coming Monday, March 3 at 8 am and we need you to submit testimony in support!
This good governance bill directs the state forester to:
- Establish and publish sustainable harvest levels that balance economic and environmental priorities.
- Develop a modern timber inventory model to track forest conditions and guide responsible management.
- Ensure timber sales align with sustainable harvest goals to support local economies and timber-dependent communities.
- Provide greater transparency and accountability in how our state forests are managed.
Essentially, this bill requires the state to tell us what a sustainable harvest level is on state forests — and makes sure they follow through. Simple as that!
