Help Us Combat Misinformation in the Make America Healthy Again Movement

By Oregonians for Food and Shelter,

Agriculture and forestry could face serious challenges from the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission. We need your help to ensure a science-based assessment of pesticides in the MAHA Commission’s initial report, which is due by May 24.

Created by President Trump in an Executive Order, the MAHA Commission is chaired by Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and includes the Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, and Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lee Zeldin, among other Trump administration officials. The initial mission of the Commission is advising and assisting the President to address the childhood chronic disease crisis.

We know that pesticides play an important role in improving the health of all Americans by contributing to an abundant supply of affordable fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet misinformation from within the MAHA movement claims that pesticides are contributing to negative health outcomes. No credible evidence supports a causal link between regulated pesticide use and rising rates of chronic childhood disease, and pesticides used in the U.S. are among the most highly studied and regulated substances in existence. Before reaching farms, each product undergoes rigorous scientific scrutiny by the EPA, with a focus on protecting children and other vulnerable populations.

If pesticides are restricted outside of EPA review and without scientific basis, important tools become politicized and producers will lose access. This would increase production costs or put some producers out of business, and decrease consumer confidence in our food and fiber supply. We invite you to send a letter to President Trump, relevant Cabinet officials, and your Members of Congress, telling them that responsible pesticide use is safe, effective, and critical to American producers and to the health of Americans.
