The special session on transportation is just a week away, but still lacks a fair amount of clarity. While the Governor has been clear on the framework, there are still plenty of questions about the special session itself. First, the Transportation Funding Committee will meet Monday, 8/25 at 3 PM [7] to hear public testimony on the draft. [8] As Oregonians await the posting of the actual bill language, there’s still plenty of political posturing and advocacy happening. Republican leadership has signaled that they’re not willing to help fast track new taxes [9]. Meanwhile, transportation experts and critics [10] continue to question whether Oregon Department of Transportation needs the money and is managing it appropriately, a point Republicans have also made for most of the year.
Many of our partners, members and affiliated timber and ag organizations are still waiting for more details before determining how to approach the proposed package and the ensuing special session. OFS will continue to track the Transportation Funding Committee process, and you can find more information here [11].
