Legislative Ag Update

By Oregonians for Food and Shelter,

With the election behind us, Leadership roles in the State Capitol are shifting as we gear up for the 2025 session. Shortly after the election, House Republican leader Jeff Helfrich (R – Hood River) stepped down from his leadership position. The Republican caucus elected incoming (and former) Representative Christine Drazan as its new leader.

On the Senate Side, Republicans confirmed that Daniel Bonham (R – The Dalles) will remain their caucus leader, while Senate Democrats elected Kayse Jama (D – Portland) to replace Kathleen Taylor (D – Portland) after just electing her earlier this year.

Of note, as ballots continue to be counted, it appears as if the Democrats will achieve 3/5ths supermajorities in both chambers next year – with one House seat (HD 22) likely to flip from R to D. None of this will materially change the challenges and opportunities ahead of OFS in 2025, and we look forward to working with the caucus leaders, particularly those with experience who know our organization and membership. Upcoming Legislative Days, December 10-12, will likely provide more detail on the concepts we will be working on next session.
