Senator Anderson speaks on Pacific Seafood fire

Sen. Dick Anderson Statement on Pacific Seafoods Fire in Newport
By Oregon State Senator Dick Anderson,

SALEM, Ore. – Sen. Dick Anderson (R-Lincoln City) issued the following statement on the fire at the Pacific Seafoods facility on Newport’s Historic Bayfront:

“My thoughts are with the people of Newport today, especially the workers at Pacific Seafoods, the families and businesses along the bayfront, and the first responders who are working to keep our community safe.

“My message to everyone is simple: please steer clear of the area and let the officials do their job. Don’t go to the bayfront to watch or take photos. If you are within a mile of the facility, follow the evacuation orders from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office website has an evacuation map, and the city has opened a shelter at Sam Case Elementary School, 459 NE 12th St., where evacuees can bring their pets. Every road that stays clear helps firefighters and hazmat crews work safely and quickly.

“I’ve been in contact with State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple. Her office has sent a hazmat team, which is monitoring the air because of anhydrous ammonia used for refrigeration at the facility. The Fire Marshal reports that the ammonia tank has been located and doesn’t appear to be punctured or leaking. Additional firefighters from Marion and Lane counties are on their way to relieve Newport crews.

“I’m grateful to the Newport firefighters, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the state and regional crews who are responding. My office will keep working with state and local officials to support Newport and Lincoln County through the response and recovery. If you need help connecting with state resources, please contact my office.”
